Day 217 - August 5th

On June 22nd I blogged about the Red Kites that we have been seeing over our house this year. Today we visited the LLanddeusant Red Kites Feeding Station to get a bit closer to them.

The Red Kite Feeding Station is located at the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Carmarthenshire and was opened in 2002 by a local partnership with the support of the Brecon Beacons National Park, The Welsh Red Kite Trust and various other wildlife organisations and individuals.

The feeding station is nothing fancy - just a specially built hide just a few feet away from where the birds are fed. From the hide visitors can watch the birds being fed daily.

We arrived shortly before feeding time and gathered inside the hide as the food (meat) was scattered on a grass area in front of us. Before we had even got to the hide we had seen a few birds circling overhead and as the food was put out the numbers began to increase.

Within a matter of minutes the air was full of Red Kites.

After several minutes of circling overhead the Kites began diving and dropping out of the air to grab the food and fly away. There were between 30 and 40 birds at the peek of this activity which lasted about 40 minutes.

It really was an amazing experience but unfortunately I didn't bring any extra lenses for the camera with me to Wales so my photos aren't the best. Wayne did take a short video which hopefully I can upload over the next week or so.
