Todays walk took us around Lulworth Castle. Built in the early 17th Century originally as a hunting lodge, the exterior of the Castle has changed little over the years. The interior however changed much until it was gutted by a disastrous fire in 1929.
The Chapel of St Mary's in the grounds of Lulworth Castle is said to be one of the finest pieces of architecture in the county of Dorset. In 1786, when freestanding Catholic churches were still banned in England, Thomas Weld the owner of Lulworth Castle was determined to build a Catholic chapel - in the guise of a family mausoleum - on his estate. King George III and Queen Charlotte visited Lulworth in 1789 and according to family legend, the King gave Thomas Weld permission to create the Catholic chapel. "Build a family mausoleum," he is said to have declared, "and you can furnish the inside as a Catholic chapel if you wish."
Within the Castle park there is an animal farm so we walked around and found some really cute animals.

Wow Karen what a fantastic post! The castle is just gorgeous - we must visit there when we next go to Bournemouth. The animals are just so cute and to get all that jousting in as well - what a great day out
